Dutch Tv-programme 'Knevel op Zaterdag'
Dutch broadcastingorganisation 'EO' - publieksservice@eo.nl , info@eo.nl23 oktober 2004
Prominent experts state that silicone breast implants leak perilous platinum. Many women contend because of this with health problems. The dutch topicality-programme 'Knevel on Zaterdag', is dedicated this whole week to the possible health risks of silicone implants. Moreover it is shown in the programme, among other things with hidden camera's, that - with exceptions- many private clinics give misleading information concerning the risks of these implants. The Dutch association of plastic surgeons shows himself shocked and will intervene.
Prof. Dr. Ernest Lykissa, toxicologist from Houston has determined - in association with the university of Washington - in new research that from silicone implants the substance 'loaded platinum' leaks: "We have found it in the liver, ovaries, nerves, leg marrow and the lungs and also in the brains". The toxicologist states that platinum that is processed in the implants "one of the most danegrous substances is, that mankind has ever made...It destroys the nerves-system". Lykissa is convinced that women become sick due to the implants: "and what is making them sick is the platinum tha comes in their body. I do not say that all women with silicone implants become sick, but if you leave those things in more than ten years I ensure you that you have a very large chance of becoming sick" thus professor Lykissa.
The chance on this danger is endorsed by plastic surgeon Rita Kappel of the dutch University Medical centre St. Radboud in Nijmegen. Thousands of Dutch women with silicone implants have considerable health problems. Kappel treats much of these women. She says: Silicone breasts are for some women unsafe, very unsafe. If I remove the implants frequently all complaints dissappear."
'Knevel op Zaterdag' spoke in Washington with the american epidemiologe Diana Zuckerman. She stood in 1992, on the basis of the prohibition on the cosmetic use of silicone implants in the United States. Then was also in the Netherlands already discussion concerning risks of it. Zuckerman is considered worldwide as thé expert in the field of silicone implants. She does not understand that these in the Netherlands can still be used: "What are you doing ? I know all studies and they give reason to large worries. There is absolutely no scientific proof that silicone implants are safe zijn." Zuckerman presents also very recent research of the American cancer institute. That indicates on an increased risk of all kinds of forms of cancer at women with siliconenbreats.
Information in the Netherlands - In the Netherlands the Healthcouncil ('Gezondheisraad', http://www.gr.nl/ , info@gr.nl ) in 1999, put in a recommendation that adequate information to potential weares of silicone implants is essential. Then minister of Public Health Els Borst took over this recommendation and obliged the implant-sector to comply. 'Knevel op Zaterdag' examined it is obeyed by the clinics. This way a female editor visited a number of private clinics which implant silicone breasts for a consult. She observed that the informative-consult on many points was short. There was insufficiently indicated on possible risks. Also on their Internet websites and in information brochures the clinics proved regularly shortage. The President of plastic surgeons association, dr. Hage reacted disappointed to the facts: "It grieves me very and I will return as a President with this information to my members and once again emphasising that this obviously occurs and that this should not occur". The ministry of Public Health did not want to react in the broadcasting to the observed findings by 'Knevel op Zaterdag'.

Epiloge by dr. Kappel after the broadcasting of 'Knevel op Zzterdag'-
"There were rather what responses a result of the interview. From this interview has been omitted that it does not concern all patients. There is no reason for panic. Me myself, I see average 1 á 2 patients per month with the strange complaint pattern. I said that there was no reason for panic, but for concern because some patients can get complaints. Also has been omitted on the question for why silicone prosthesis are still used my answer that it about a superior product that we need for reconstructions and in those cases of underdeveloped breast udder gland. However, both the patient and the doctor want a product on which they can rely on. Patients who choose after information for silicone prosthesis, also get them from me, but I do tell tem that it is wise to replace them after 10 years. In nijmegen I work on the development of a test to determine in advance who runs risks on health complaints. For that I have also been in contact with research workers in Vienna and Munich. With such a test you therefore be able to examine if you can expect problems with silicone implants or not. I keep you informed !"

Dr. Lykissa uses state of the art equipment called an ICP-MS (which can detect platinum in parts per billion) and an Ion Chromatograph (to determine ionization). It is recognized by the scientific community that "platinum salts" (aka chloroplatinic acid) can cause systemic disease in humans as a result of toxic and/or hypersensitivity reactions. These toxic and hypersensitivity reactions can range from asthma, rhinorrhea, tinnitus, conjunctivitis, urticaria, fatigue syndrome secondary to impaired oxygen exchange, neurotoxicity, sicca syndrome, and macular rashes............

More Platinum Found in Women With Implants
By Diedtra Henderson, AP / Globe Staff - dhenderson@globe.com
26 august 2004
WASHINGTON - Researchers have found high concentrations of platinum in women who got silicone breast implants and in the children they bore and breast-fed afterward. The type of platinum found in the women's blood and urine was different than the traces of regular platinum not uncommon in people's bodies. It was a highly reactive platinum, used to help turn silicon oil into the honey-like gel that lends a more natural feel to a breast implant........................

NEW YORK, Oct. 15, 2003
(CBS) The FDA is trying to decide whether to lift an 11-year ban on silicone breast implants, reigniting a long-running debate on the safety of the implants as they hear testimony from all sides. The Early Show medical correspondent Emily Senay explains that on Wednesday, the FDA advisory panel is expected to vote on whether to recommend that the decision be reversed. ........

Washington, DC 20515Dear Colleague,
I would like to proved additional insight on information that was recently circulated to Members regarding the Mayo Clinic Study and Harvard Nurses' Study on silicone breast implants and immunological disorders. I CAN ASSURE YOU: THE MAYO CLINIC STUDY AND THE HARVARD NURSES STUDY ARE SERIOUSLY FLAWED. In a hearing before the House Subcommitte on Government Reform and Oversight in August 1995, I testified on the following facts about the Harvard Nurses Study #1:
(1) Its authors excluded all women who developed diseases after May of 1990, thereby excluding many women who developed symptoms years after receiving implants
(2) Women were included who had implants in place for as little as one mouth. (Many other studies report that symptoms of autoimmune disease do not manifest thenselves until 8 to 15 years after implantation)
(3) It did not look for the atypical diseases reported by thousands of women across the country who have received breast implants.
(4) The study group was so small that it would not have found an association between cigarette smoking and cancer.
(5) Three of the authors were either personally receiving monies from breast implant manufacturers or had agreed to act as a paid consultant for a breast implant manufacturer while they were conducting the study - yet they failed to disclose this at the time.
(6) While Dow Corning had no direct involvement in the study, Dow Corning contributed $7 million to Brigham & women's Hospital, the institution conducting the study, while the study was in progress.
Out of respect for the thousands of women who have suffered debilitating conditions from silicone poisoning and have repeatedly been told it's "all in your head," I respectfully request that you obtain all the facts on this issue. Breast Implants: The Truth is Still Out There

Washington, DC 20515Dear Colleague,
[ First paragraph is repeat of previous letter ]
Interestingly enough, unpublished preliminary findings from a SECOND Harvard Nurses' Study found increased incidence of rheumatoid arthritus in silicone breast implant recipients. Furthermore, the SECOND study was conducted using acceptable scientific methodology. The following is a side-by-side comparison
Harvard Study #1 => [ see above (1) - (4) ]
Harvard Study #2 =>
(1) - Women surveyed were contacted recent as 1994
(2) - The majority of women were implanted during or prior to the 1980's
(3) - Specifically surveys for connective tissue and immunological disorders, as well as many other health disorders.
(4) Study group of 400.000 women, the biggest study group to date.
The preliminary interim data of the SECOND study concludes that silicone breast implants are "associated with increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis" and that the data collected at the time the preliminary report was written were "too sparse to evaluate whether breast implants are associated with risk of specific immunological diseases. The strength of this analysis lies in its very large sample size".
