Introduction

The event was organized by Jose Vega, an independent candidate for U.S. Congress in the Bronx (NY-15), and who is also part of the Vega-Sare Peace Fund. This event was organized to make sure that Dr. Mark Perlmutter's voice was heard, after a previous event scheduled the day before was canceled at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.   

The talk was co-moderated by Jose Vega and Dr. Salman Khan, a professor of Medicine and specialist in infectious diseases at Columbia University.

Jose Vega: Alright. So, I just want to congratulate everybody who decided to come out here. I know there was an environment of 'hate,' of so-called 'hate speech' and so-called  'Anti-Semitism' that shut down the original venue. I think that that's horrible. And I want to congratulate all of you for deciding to come out here anyway. We were able to finally get another venue so that Dr. Mark Perlmutter could be heard here. You'll see that there's another gentleman to his side who will be co-moderating with me.  He is Dr. Salman Khan. He is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, Irving Medical Center.
 
Dr. Khan is an infectious disease specialist and completed his Fellowship training at Mount Sinai [hospital in New York City]. He is part of CUHSP, a coalition of faculty and staff advocating for Palestine at the Columbia medical campus, as well as the faculty and staff for Justice in Palestine chapter at Columbia and a member of Health Care Workers for Palestine.  I'm going to allow him now to introduce Dr. Mark Perlmutter.
 
 And just before that, I want to thank everybody again for being here in East Harlem. I'm from the Bronx myself. It's an equally abandoned area [audience chuckles], so I feel at home here.  So I'm very happy to be here for all of you.  But now I'll pass it off to Dr. Khan, so go ahead.

Dr Salman Khan: Glad to be here. And, I would say despite the last minute changes, it inspired all of us to be here.  It's a great honor to be here with Dr. Mark Perlmutter.

Dr. Mark Perlmutter is an orthopedic foot and hand surgeon who has had a career of service, volunteering in medical missions around the world helping people. And he has also gone to Gaza which is what he's going to be discussing today --- his firsthand experiences.   

Dr. Mark Perlmutter: Give me some feedback. I can go rapidly though my slides and make time for questions and answering. Or, I can take time through them and give more detail. What would you prefer? [unclear audience response]

What I'll do is I'll expedite the slides. This audience has some or a lot of this stuff. And let me point out that what I saw here. hurts. I'm not editing these films. I've been criticized in the past for 'dehumanizing' Palestinians, but I assure you that it wasn't Ï that dehumanized them. Right?

That's the IDF, which I preferentially call the "IOF" for ' Offensive Forces.' So if anybody is offended by anything, just cover your eyes or leave. But there is no editing here - in no part of this - and no warning.

Now first slide [1 - 04:09 time mark].
[Dr Perlmutter's first words were not heard properly by the audience, so he re-starts his comments:]

This typifies the feeling of the children there. We asked a kid to draw this when I was there. He's carrying his brother, running from one bomb and absolutely not knowing if he's running into the center of the plane's next drop.  They just landed, mostly haphazardly, in the region of collections of women and children.  

Next slide [2 - 04:55 time mark].
This shows three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, waiting for the partner who's busy. And I stole this. I totally plagiarized this from The New Yorker and added my own edits to it. So he can't sue me by my admitting it. But the fourth horseman that's missing is Famine.  

And here, I not jokingly state that he's busy working hard in Gaza for the last year. And the reason why I put this up is to remind people that the gist of my talk is that this is definitively a genocide. And I would have said something different than that if I was at your campus [Ichan Medical School of Mount Sinai], out of respect for the politics of it.  But shame on your administration. Shame on them!  They are suppose to be the bastions of education. And education does not happen in the classroom. And I am the global Vice President of the International College of Surgeons, Vice President of the World Surgical Foundation, the previous past President of the U.S. chapter of the International College of Surgeons  ...and ITeam [?] America..[?]....So I can share the importance of what global medicine is.

So, there's eight billion people in the world. Does anybody know how many of those people will never see a doctor, or a nurse, or a practitioner at any time in their life?  

You're going to answer six. Six of eight billion people will never, ever see a doctor or a nurse. And I see that every time I go to Latin America. Now, I will see people that have fractures and lacerations that are decades old. And even before October 6th [2023], Gaza would have ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of health care delivery.

I put this slide up because... not that I wanted to...uh.,  I wanted to illustrate that it's a failure of Western government. And it's a failure even more importantly of Western media - because Western media did not report on the famine until nine months after it starts. Even though they well knew that it was taking place. They well knew that Israel was using famine as a weapon of war.

Next slide [3 - 07:29 time mark].

This is self explanatory. This is square footage per square footage, the exact photograph.  The amount of devastation that has taken place. When we hear the estimates of 40,000, 45,000 Palestinians dying.

That's horse shit. Right?

If you could look at the statistics of the earthquakes in Haiti - and I was there the day the earthquake hit Haiti. And I went back four times. And every time I went back, the numbers grew exponentially.

You know why?

Because they remove the rubble! Rafah has hundreds and hundreds of MILLIONS of tons of concrete and rebar. And they're all buried on top of these people. My estimate is that they're 200,000 Palestinians under this rubble.  If you just follow the trajectory of the earthquakes that happened in Turkiye, in Bangladesh or in Haiti,  this is an "earthquake."  It's just dropped by American taxpayers through  American F-35s gifted to a monster.  

I can speak like that now because, you know, the bastards who canceled it aren't here [audience laughs].

Well, they succumb to the pressures of AIPAC!  Let's be honest. The Zionistic pressures on your administrations are the same as the Zionistic pressures [that] are on Columbia and NYU [New York University]. One dean at NYU gave Zionists a protected status. The same way that they gave to Jews, and to blacks, and to all people of color and to women. So that they cannot be prejudiced against. They gave protected status to a political ideology that was invented in the 1890s. Not to Judaism which is thousands of years older. They didn't give it to Democrats. They didn't give it to the Republicans or the Tories. They gave it to a political group.   

Why? Because of AIPAC pressure.

And that's why professors are being stymied and threatened with termination. Or, terminated.  

Next slide please [4 - 09:39 time mark].
When we got to Gaza, and the slides you're about to see are a "typical " day at work at the European Gaza Hospital. When we got there, the bombing starts. Well, the drones start around 3:30.  I was there during Ramadan. During breaking of the fast Iftar is the Killing Time. The drones started more loudly, closer, different sounds.  Quad choppers showed up.  

When women and children were congregated and in groups, the efficacy of a 2,000 pound bomb is remarkably enhanced. Isn't it?
And so ten minutes after the bomb hit,  one third of the children would come in dead - that were put on the gurneys alive.

And 90% of our patients were kids; were toddlers.  Of the third that were in the Emergency room, a third would die in front of us, that weren't dead.

Next slide [6 - 11:12 time mark].
Of the third that we could take to the operating room,  most of those that died - while they're in the hospital - usually by infection. We had no antibiotics. We had no soap. We had no antiseptic. We had no way of sterilizing our instruments. And this is a typical presentation.

Next slide [7 - 11:44 time mark].
Those that did survive, we couldn't clean their wounds. This little girl was intubated. She has shrapnel wounds all over her body. She died the day after I took this picture.  

Next photo [8 - 12:04 time mark].
There's no suture available. The little kid on your left had a 50 % body burn. To you students, at no place on this earth does a kid with a 50% body burn die. No place.

Of the most austere environments I've done work in,  I have never even heard of a kid with a 50% body burn dying. This kid would have had a better chance of survival if I had amputated her hands.

The boy on the right,  I can't tell you how I treated him. I would lose my license.  All we could do was pray that he would die. To cover his pain, we had no pain medicine. You wouldn't see tears out of this kid because dehydration stopped them from appearing. We had no saline to keep him from dehydrating. That's his butt cheeks sitting on the bad in front of him.

We saw several classes of wounds and evidence of illegal weapons. This is a white phosphorous bomb. The brother of a physician who's hovering over him, who was working in his office when the bomb went off. Seventy two burn holes on his front. Some of them burned into his abdomen, hence his scar. His back had twice as many. We couldn't hydrate him enough. He died - literally- of dehydration.

Next slide [10 - 14:07 time mark].   (I think it's a repeat of that.)
The second class of wounds were very high velocity missile wounds. Not bullets. Very similar to the 'pledgets' [?] or 'fledgets, I forget the right way to say it, but Israel was outlawed for using decades ago.  A small, little tungsten eraser-shaped pellet; about a third the size of a number 2 pencil eraser that are surrounding a high intensity explosive that shoot out the bomblets or the pellets in 360 degrees.

And you all know the formula for the kinetic energy of a bullet, I'm sure, that the VELOCITY means everything and not the size of the bullet or the mass of the bullet. And so they leave with such high velocity that we often in some children could not see the entrance wound. We saw bilateral hemothoraces with a one millimeter exit. And we had to struggle to find the entrance. And we would see a little pinhole scab under the armpit.

 The enlargement by this little girl's nose, and as I took my hand away,  I'm looking to see her eyes that are fixed and dilated, her mandible came out and her teeth came out of her mouth. Her upper mandible fell out of her mouth and she fell over when I took my hand away. She's not even three.

The last two slides by the way are examples of illegal weapons.  They are legal to use only on their own territory. They're legal for the Ukraine to use only on their own territory, and not in the Kursh region where they've been taking over Russian territory.

Health care workers were specifically targeted. This fellow is Tamir. He's an orthopedic nurse. He was in the Kuwati hospital closing the incision of another person when an IDF soldier burst in and ordered him to leave the patient alone. Like an ethical caregiver, he refused to do so. Tamir was shsot with a military rifle. The IDF soldeir shot Tamir in his knee, blowing his tibia across the room. He was then taken to another operating room and fixed. He lost so much tissue that his bone was replaced by bone cement that they used as fluid for artificial hips and knees to fill the void in his tibia, only to have a gastroc flap or something to cover the defect which nobody there was capable of doing there.

I did do that surgery on him. But at this point on the second day.... The reason why I bring up this topic is he's just a health care worker that was specifically targeted by the IDF. His management that you're about to hear exemplifies maybe THIRTY war crimes.

 He's taken prisoner by the IDF without committing any crimes.  He's taken to an Israeli jail. For 45 days, he's not given any food but a juice box every other day. Sometimes every day, but mostly every other day. No solid food. Zero wound care. Maggots are the only thing that cleaned his wounds. He's blindfolded and he's handcuffed. Already, what's that? Seven war crimes? Seven violations of the Geneva Convention that Israel itself signed in 1951, two years after it was created. He was dropped naked at the border on the 45th day. War crime number 50 probably when you really know his whole story. War crime number 51 as a Going Away present: An Israeli soldier gives him a rifle butt in his right eye and explodes it in his head. So he crawls for three kilometers. Starved, emaciated, he's lost a third of his body weight. He's blind in one eye. He's got an open wound. He's leaving a trail of his vitreous humor from his eyeball and his maggots behind him as somebody finds him three kilometers later on the road and brings him to us. He's in a coma when he gets to us. And when I say 'us' I mean the European Gaza hospital. I got to him a month afterwards when he just got out of a coma and he has a bed sore on the back of his head, on the back of his ears. I've never seen a bed sore on the back of anybody's head ever in my life.

Has anybody here ever heard of that?

Right. Unheard of! Just simply unheard of.

And it's not because the European Gaza hospital didn't have caregivers or people who were loving. It's a hospital that has 215 beds that was never outfitted for more than a hundred because of its poverty. And there were a thousand active, bleeding, infected  patients in a hospital that had four operating rooms. Right?

Overwhelmed.

All the caregivers were gone. There was one denizen orthopedic surgeon that was left who would walk five miles a day, once or twice a week to join us. But his family was hurt and they were evacuated under threat of death. And he still shows up a couple of times a week. There was no local docs there. If it wasn't for the local medical students that were genuine heroes, that showed up to help us, there would have been no local caregivers. The medical students really ran the hospital. And it would have failed had it not been for them. Maybe twenty surguries later and an evacuation to Egypt, Tamir's getting his leg amputated next.

So he hasn't seen his family since May. He doesn't know if they're alive. He has two little girls and a wife and has no way of communicating with them. He's probably the best example of war crimes manifested in a single human being I've ever heard of in my life. He looks very much like my father's sepia photographs where my father, a Jewish physician at the end of World War II,  who was assigned to go into concentration camps. And he took photographs. And I have his photographs of Jews that were emaciated at the end of the war. They look exactly like Tamir and vice ersa.  

Next slide [12 - 20:53 time mark].
Girls were targeted in their lower extremities. This is a 12 year old.
This is a high velocity bullet wound to a foot. We saw just as many to all lower extremities. This is a leg amputation. In fact, it's not one amputation, it's probably four leg amputations because they all get infected. We close our wounds with the anticipation of an infection. We left them open in many cases. We knew that maggots would get in them. Sometimes we wanted the maggots to get in them. On several occasions, I moved maggots from one patient to another to clean their wounds because the hours were always filled with an incoming influx of children. With four operating rooms, you have no choice. 

Next slide [13 - 21:45 time mark].  
Jouri is nine years old. Her family was in a bomb blast. So we saw high velocity sniper wounds. We saw illegal phosphorous bombs. We saw an illegal cluster-type munition. And this is the most typical presentation, bomb blast. Her she is losing most of her buttocks and she's lost four inches of her femur. The external fixator was put on before I got there. I took out literally two cups of maggots out of her butt cheeks alone, not even counting this.  

And they are what saved her life, disgusting as that sounds. Had it not been for them, she would have died of sepsis.

This is her after her fourth or fifth surgery [Editor's Note: There was likely another slide shown to the audience at this point, but it didn't appear on the recorded video; only the first slide {above} of Jouri's wounds]. Feroze, my hero, was there. Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, is the one who wrote the article to the New York Times. A genuine Nobel Prize laureate, if I had to write the assignment for somebody. We operated on her together several times. We shortened her femur with the help of a British team. That gave us enough leg shortening, not just to feel the femur bone, but to shorten the sciatic nerve of her left butt cheek because the nerve had a five centimeter segmental defect out of it. And the only way to get the nerve to heal was to shorten her leg so the two inches of nerve could be brought together so we could heal her nerve. And she's surviving. She's one of the few that survived. Every member of her family either died or got injured in that blast.

This slide is important to understand that the blood that was on our hands at the end of her case - was not hers. It's YOURS. It's your taxpayer dollars that bought that bomb. And it wasn't us that saved her. It's YOU that could save her by stopping the next bomb from falling. We'll talk about that.

Next slide [14 - 23:58 time mark].
Boys were targeted in their upper extremity. This is a six year old boy that I had to operate on because his other arm was missing. His eg came in next to him - not attached to him. So I used the nerves and tendons from his leg to reconstruct his hand. I don't know if you can see the nerve branch up here - and these are all pantographs. I ran out of tendons, so his thumb is hyper flexed. But you have to give somebody AN extremity. Right?

I don't know what happened to this kid. Chances are this would have gotten infected. I left it open, making room for an infection to drain.  

Next slide [15 - 24:50 time mark].     
The next type of wound in terms of targeting children, are a direct sniper wounds. Let's talk about the kid on the left first. Both of these kids have something in common. They were both shot in the chest AND the head. Sixty five doctors have testified that they saw kids shot in the chest or the head. As far as I know,  I'm the only one who saw two kids shot in both the chest and the head.  And no sniper - of which Netanyahu says are the best trained snipers in the world. So I'll take him at his word. Until he lies in front of the U.S. Congress and says that:

 - "We have the most moral army in the world."
 - "We would never deliberately hurt a kid."
 
 But no kid gets shot TWICE by mistake.

Now let's talk about the kid on your left. His father was walking with them.  He feels a tug at his arm, and doesn't know where his kid went. He thinks that he just tripped and fell down. He looks around for him and finds him ten feet away. Then, as he's looking at his kid, he sees him get shot the second time in his head.  Then he looks at the direction of where the gun noise came from, and he sees the IDF soldier who shot his son -- for the second time.

There's a gauze over the hole, exactly where all the people put his exit. Entrance on the other side of the kid's temple. I couldn't  photograph the kid's chest. You know why?  Because it wasn't there. It simply was gone.

You could have put an American football in the space that sunshine would go through on that kid's chest. And doesn't happen with low velocity bullets. Wounds like pistols and things like that.    

Nest slide [16 - 26:51 time mark].
This is what our American bombs do. This is the stuff our press doesn't have the guts to put on TV. This is the result of indiscriminate bombing of innocent people.

 Yeah. Let me set this up. This is a Hasidic Jew [video] in New York holding a Palestinian placard. Why? Why is there hope here?

Well, 40% of American Jews under 40, believe that there's a genocide. The largest Jewish population in the world. Forty percent of those under 40 believe that there's not just something "bad" going on, not something "wrong" going on,.. an actual genocide.
Thirty percent of all Jews in the United States here, regardless of age, think that there's a genocide going on. So that is a sign of hope. The word that the New York Times wouldn't print when they refused our first five articles. They wouldn't print it up before a month ago.  The Washington Post still won't print that word  ['genocide'] in spite of the fact that a growing majority of people, the people who are afraid of offending feel that way. But....  

[starts video clip and asks:] Is there audio? [Reply: There may not be.]

Okay, they're screaming at each other, as you can see. But the Rabbi is calling the other people 'Zionists,'
 - that "you don't understand Judaism "
 - that "you're not respecting Judaism "
-  that "you're the enemy of Judaism "
-  "By hurting the Palestinians, you're disrespecting Judaism at its core. "

  And that's the truth.  I wish you could hear the audio, but you can see his passion. You cannot support the spirit of Judaism without supporting the rights and the liberties of Palestine.

Golda Meir had a passport that had a country written on it.  You know what it was? Palestine.

It's only the Nakhba that separated that.   

Next slide [17]
Another sign of hope. We started this GoFundMe page to help put Palestinian medical students into American medical schools. We solicited every single medical school in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Five medical schools said Yes. One in Calgary, four in the United States. They all had one thing in common:  When I asked them: "Why you? "

Why would you take a Palestinian medical student?

You know what they all had in common?  The deans of Admission.

They were all Jewish.  One hundred percent of the five were Jewish.

Harvard Medical School and Tuft's Medical School said No, but their Dental Schools said Yes.  The deans of Harvard's and Tuft's Dental programs, Jewish.  When I asked them why?
 
"It's because I'm not a Zionist,... off the record."

But Zionism rules. The power of Zionism is huge and our charge is to help, which is why we're meeting here. Right?  

The power of the AIPAC and the ultra evangelical Christian [???] and their money and their hundreds of millions of dollars that they donate to Israel; more than AIPAC! They influence in the favor of Israel, our legislature, MORE than AIPAC does in terms of financial donations. But the power of that money is our enemy. That's what we have to fight. And we fight it with the truth.

How do we know what's effective?   

This morning, I had a telephone call, a zoom call, while we were...Before we went to TSA   

jump ahead (ref. NSC)

So we're on the telephone call with them,  because we're trying to get in, we're pushing hard to speak at the U.N. We're pushing hard for an audience with Biden and with this fellow named Gordon who will hopefully be the link and replacement if Harris gets in. And we're pushing for that ??  and she told us that it was our letter in the New York Times and the letter that was signed by, over now, 100 American doctors that were in Gaza that influenced the Biden Administration to give Israel the ultimatum either you let aid in or we stop military aid in the next 30 days.  So there is a chance to win. The power of Doctors united to make change - for humanitarian reasons. Not once in our letters to doctors, not once in our letter to the New York Times did we criticize Zionism. Right?

Not once did we criticize Judaism. It was a completely nonsectarian letter just pointing out the humanity and the inhumanity of how a population is being hurt. And yet,  the New York Times eventually caved, but that's a good sign! That means that we're making a difference.  And that newspaper is only read by rich, white influential people primarily. And so, it reached a white audience. Right? It doesn't give a hoot about people of color or they would have published it earlier. Right?

That scholarly article written by Dr. Feroze Sidhwa did make an impact. He very carefully tabulated: how many of the 69 doctors saw famine? 100%. How many saw kids shot in the head? 90%  Or chest. How many people saw restrictions in aid? 100%.  How many people saw psychiatric disasters greater than they've ever seen? 100% of us.

 It was so carefully tabulated, it was futile. They could not say no to publishing it. And so, in response to that, we did have an impact and we're moving forward. And she told us on the phone today, that they're responding to that. That there's a dichotomy of pressures and a dichotomy of forces - not saying it, but strongly implying that.  And, well, she did say that our strongest ally in the Middle East:  their interests have to be protected. I'm not sure that they're our strongest ally. I just think it's the equivalent of an aircraft carrier floating in the desert. So we can, you know, have our strategic interests taken care of, but not our humanitarian interests. And we appeal to them that our interests are critical here because we're falling on the wrong side of history. And those words were said to them - and she agreed. Absolutely agreed.
 
 So I think we are making an impact. Further proof of the impact of the question that I would want you to ask me, but now I'll bring it up:  The letter that we wrote to President Biden was duplicated by now 300 Jewish Israeli physicians. And those 300 physicians wrote the identical letter saying, please stop delivering bombs to our country to stop the genocide. They used the word 'genocide' in their letter. Several of those initial authors of that letter, actually had to leave the country.
