Dogs, cats typically killed within 24 hours and dumped into trash bags
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA] killed at least 88% of the dogs and cats entrusted in its care last year, in contrast to “no kill” animal shelters which have adoption rates of over 90%.
PETA took in 2,626 pets in 2014 but only found homes for 39, with the rest either being killed within 24 hours or sent to kill shelters.
“Most of these animals were perfectly healthy, and according to reports by the Virginia Department of Agriculture, inspectors of PETA’s Norfolk headquarters frequently found ‘no animals to be housed in the facility,’ and that ’90% were euthanized within the first 24 hours of custody,’” Sputnik reported. “The official 88% kill rate of 2014 is up from 82.4% in 2013.”
The dead dogs and cats are thrown into garbage bags and stored inside expensive freezers paid for by PETA donors.

I read an expose written by a PETA volunteer a few years ago. She wrote that the very first project new volunteers are assigned to do is to kill the incoming pets. She told of one very old man who brought his pet rabbit, that he really loved, to PETA to find a home for it because he was going into a nursing home. They promised to take good care of his rabbit. After he left, they took the poor thing in back and just killed it, right then and there. It makes me cry just thinking of how cruel they are.
Also, Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society has allied with PETA, and has the same philosophy. Never donate to the national Humane Society (the mother ship), or to PETA. The local Humane Societies are the ones that actually rescue and re-home the animals. Do donate to them if you can.

Another Angle to the PETA Story
[Editor's Note: The PETA expose posted at Infowars, assuming it's accurate, is going to put a dent in PETA's reputation and result in fewer donations. It's common for organizations who start with high ideals, to eventually be taken over by self serving individuals who capitalize on the organization's public image. The Red Cross is a perfect example of a scam organization who pretends to collect money for victims of disasters, but actually keeps the vast bulk of the donated money for themselves. The purpose of an animal shelter is to protect and feed animals, not kill them. In my book, PETA loses all credibility in all arenas when they do this sort of thing. If they really cared about animals as their image would suggest, they wouldn't be killing animals with such swiftness and in such high numbers.
The surest way to curb factory farming is to stop eating factory bred animals Most people are opposed to the brutal conditions of factory animal farming and would prefer animals to be raised in traditional, non factory environments. We really need to think more about the very idea of eating animals. The health and vitality derived from an all-plant diet is uncontestable and provable, although I know certain northerly blood type groups are genetically predisposed towards a meat diet. The body works much harder to digest and produces much more cellular waste from animal meat than from plant food. Fruits particularly, as Dr. Robert Morse suggests in his videos, have a very high vibrational energy and can restore your health like no other food. We need protein, but it doesn't have to come from land animals. Fish is a wiser choice if you want to eat meat. ]

USDA's official number of animals killed for food
USDA slaughter stats 2008
Cattle: 35,507,500
Pigs: 116,558,900
Chickens: 9,075,261,000
Layer hens: 69,683,000
Broiler chickens: 9,005,578,000
Turkeys: 271,245,000
Update to numbers in article: the USDA slaughter stats, but at the end of the article are more thorough numbers: animal killed for Americans' food. This number includes animals that die for reasons other than slaughter (like layer hens and discarded male layer chicks, most of which are not slaughtered), and in also includes animals killed abroad whose meat is imported to the US. Most of all, it includes sea animals, which the USDA numbers don't include, but which add a lot.
the total number of all animals killed for food in 2000 was 9.7 billion. In more personal terms, the average American meat-eating man, woman, and child subsidize the abuse and slaughter of over 37 animals per year. It's much more if they eat sea dwelling animals). That's 2,800 animals in a 75-year lifetime. This number includes 2,630 chickens and ducks, 123 turkeys, 32 pigs, 13 cows and calves, and 2 sheep. None of these figures include fish, lobster, crab, or other aquatic animals.WHAT YOU CAN DO:
* Eliminate meat, dairy, and eggs from your diet.* Eliminate leather, wool, fur, & silk from your wardrobe.
* Educate yourself and others.

The devastating effects on our soil, water, ecology because of the US meat consumption alone http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/weekinreview/27bittman.html?_r=0
Americans eat about the same amount of meat as we have for some time, about eight ounces a day, roughly twice the global average. At about 5 percent of the world’s population, we “process” (that is, grow and kill) nearly 10 billion animals a year, more than 15 percent of the world’s total.Did you know that:According to the Nature Conservancy, every second of every day one football field of rainforest is being destroyed. Much of this forestland is being cut down to farm and raise livestock, which is then exported to the U.S. and ends up in fast-food hamburgers. According to the Rainforest Action Network, 55 square feet of tropical rainforest are destroyed to make every fast-food hamburger made from rainforest cattle. This is an area about the size of a small kitchen and it is gone forever each time one of these hamburgers is eaten. It is even worse because with each square foot of rainforest gone, up to 30 different plant species, 100 different insect species and dozens of bird, mammal and reptile species are destroyed. The rainforests are so important because half of the species on earth live in them and the forests are vital to the world’s oxygen supply.Foods that KILL or foods that HEAL our planetREAL AWAKENING FROM THE ANIMAL FOODS MATRIXHow to Win An Argument With a Meat-EaterMANCarnism - Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows
