My husband is a pilot, and he says that pilots don't want to fly in the wake of another plane, so they choose a parallel course to fly in.  This causes the grid patterns you talk about.
  If these contrails are so scary, why hasn't somebody gone up to one and gotten samples?

I've read a lot on this subject, yet this idea has not once
come up.  Why not?????

That has been done on a number of occasions. Go to the William Thomas web site  and see his archive of articles about analysis and sampling from the air. Also go to Chris Carnicom. he's done lots of sampling analysis, on the ground and in the air. See my Chemtrail page for links to their web sites. Other people have done sampling as well.
 
Go to www.rense.com and look under Chentrails. Many articles there on sampling.
