[Editor's Note: This article is going to have to be an ongoing, work-in-progress, as it takes a lot of time to research, review, and rebut the "tsunami' of BS and disinformation assembled by a growing phalanx of Fukushima radiation fear promoters. For now, I'll start with an introduction to the main protagonists and fold in the writings of other critics and debunkers of the Fukushima Radiation Scare Corps. I'm sure there are many other radiation alarmists out there beyond the ones I've listed here,. If you wish to review and offer your own critical analysis of any of the radiation fear promoters listed here (or others not listed), please feel free to submit your review for inclusion in this paper I don't have the time to listen to and analyze each and every Fukushima fear promoter and I would greatly appreciate the assistance of any motivated reader who has the time and inclination to help in dismantling the preposterous hype being put forward by these anti-nuclear zealots (greatly assisted behind the scenes, I'm convinced, by oil and natural gas energy interests). May 19, 2012I posted my first article on Fukushima radiation alarmism (which currently floods the Internet) just 8 days after the March 11, 2011 attack on Japan. Titled, Japan Radiation Scare Hugely Overblown by Western Media (Mar. 19, 2011), I pointed out in that article that there was a HUGE disconnect between the actual background radiation readings measured in Tokyo (and within the 12.5 mile radius zone around the Daiichi nuclear station) and the absurd, irresponsible ("foreigners should leave Tokyo"), and grossly exaggerated 'dangers' being fomented by alternative news media (Amy Goodman, et al), Internet web sites, Youtube, and leftist leaning radio stations quoting and interviewing anti-nuclear energy propagandists like Arnie Gundersen, Christopher Busby, Leuren Moret, Yoichi Shimatsu, and later, Robert Alvarez, Kevin Kamps, Paul Gunter, Stephen Jones, Mark Sircus, and John Apsley among many others. Youtube presenters or media interviewers are treating these people as if their wild exaggerations, overstatements, and outright fabrications possessed scientific validity and factual certitude. And I've yet to hear or see one of these Youtube Fukushima radiation fear fest (or radio interviews) include an opportunity for someone from the other side of the fence to counter or challenge the statements from these nuclear energy critics. It's been a one-sided radio/Internet media barrage since mid March of 2011 and it's more intense now than ever.

Within a few days of the 3/11 attack on Japan, it became clear that rense.com was destined to become Command Central for the Fukushima radiation fear promotion campaign. I can't get over how many the-sky-is-falling, Fukushima radiation 'catastrophy' aticles (and radio interviews) are posted to that web site on a daily basis. I've had many people send me e-mails to tell me that they can no longer go to rense.com because the Fukushima fear mongering is simply too much to put up with.
Another web site that leads the pack in pounding away at the Fukushima radiation party line is enenews.com. This web site ONLY posts articles exclusively devoted to driving home the Fukushima fear package. According to Whois-search, this web site was created on March 16, 2011 and quickly zoomed to a very high alexa.com traffic ranking of 26,000 for world traffic and 7,700 for the USA (by comparison, educate-yourself.org currently ranks 61,000 world and 21,000 USA; while rense.com currently ranks at 7,600 world and 2.800 USA). How is it that a web site that is only one year old, and devoted to one topic, could rise to such a high ranking plateau without lots of money, technological savoir faire, and busy worker bees to make that happen so quickly? (Hint: Oil & natural gas energy companies that want to push nuclear energy competitors out of the way)So who's behind this web site? No one knows because the identity of the owners are hidden. The Administrative Contact given at WhoIs is "DomainSecrecy.net, Private Registrant (1331838379@domainsecrecy.net)" located in Providence, Utah. The Technical Contact is "UK2 Group, Technical Support (domainmaster@westhost.com)", also located at the same address in Providence, Utah. The Game Plan
It's important to realize that the 3/11, attack on Japan and the sabotage of the Daiichi nuclear power station was intended by the Rockefellers to both cripple the Japanese economy (which was heading towards a giant leap in new technology) and to disassemble the entire nuclear power industry - worldwide - in order to consolidate the energy market down to oil and natural gas. It's not an accident that all of that natural gas "fracking" that we've been hearing about for the past year or two, would need to create a new market to sell all of that newly extracted natural gas to, and what better way than to shut down all of those 'dangerous', radiation-spewing, dinosaur nuclear power plants and convert them over to "safe" and "clean" natural gas power plants using that new spiffy German design gas turbine that Merkel is so proud of. http://educate-yourself.org/lte/leurenmoret02mar15.shtml#topMy attention was first drwan to the statements of the self described 'geoscientist' and former employee at the Lawrence Livermore Lab, Leuren Moret, because her coproducer in alarmism, Canadian attorney Alfred Webre, had put me on his mailing list following the 3/11 attack on Japan, apparently assuming I would be re-posting her interviews and Youtube productions at my web site (Alfred has since dropped me from his mailing list :)). I haven't attempted to count them yet, but Leuren must easily have 100 or more Youtube videos posted on line.
I haven't yet found an English speaking web site that discusses Leuren's educational background, but I did find a Japanese web site that reviews a talk Leuren gave in Japan on July 5, 2004. The writer of that article says that Leuren has a master's degree in geology from Cal. State Davis, and a master's in Middle East Studies from Cal. State Berkeley. The article also said that she studied for a doctorate in geology, but never completed her dissertation. Therefore, her educational background is essentially that of a geologist, and not that of a nuclear scientist (as she is often touted to be by others).
In watching my first Youtube video of her, I couldn't believe the chutzpah of this woman to stand in front of an audience and be video taped uttering one egregious falseshood after another and yet do it with such an air of presumptuous authority and confidence of delivery as if she was lecturing to a room full of school children and explaining the basic canons of physics. I saw the following video clip of Leuren in April of 2011, shortly after it was posted on the Internet and I was simply floored by the multitude of patently false statements uttered within the first 3 minutes of this video posted on April 11, 2011 (an interesting date, I might add)

This clip is 9 minutes long. The first three minutes are devoted to statements about Fukushima. I can't comment on the validity of her statements in the remaining portion of the video, but if her disregard for the value of truthfulness is as flagrantly trampled upon as in her Fukushima statements, then you'd be a fool to trust anything she has to say without first verifying the facts yourself.
A few of Leuren's more pronounced doozies on Fukushima:
Beginning at 0:00:53 :
1. "The reactors at Fukushima are the largest in the world and SIX of them...are in TOTAL MELTDOWN, "
2. "They have been melting down since THIRTY minutes after the tsunami."
3. "Because the cooling systems went off when the earthquake happened, and NINETY minutes after the cooling stopped, the reactors go into meltdown. "
Every one of these alarming statements is patently untrue.
You merely have to read the July 2011 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) report on Fukushima (http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1118/ML111861807.pdf) to know that while the tsunami hit Daiichi at 3:37 PM on March 11, 2011, the first explosion in Unit #1 did not occur until 3:36 PM on March 12, a day leter. Unit #2 and #4 each had an explosion on March 15, while Unit #3 had an explosion on March 14. Only Units 1, 2, and 3 were in operation, while Units 4, 5, and 6 were in SHUTDOWN mode. It's really, really hard to get a "meltdown" going when a nuclear reactor is in shudown mode and its fuel rods had been removed from the reactor core.
The NRC report says that there was partial reactor core damage and rates a percentage (35 - 75%) for each damaged reactor. Nowhere in the report does the NRC use the term "meltdown" to describe the reactor core damage because there was no meltdown of any reactor at Daiichi.B) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcWu8mXaSYs
In this Youtube video posted just 9 days later on April 20, 2011 (Hitler's birthday), Lauren now breezily states that FOUR reactors had explosions at Daiichi, apparently forgetting that a week earlier she definitively pegged the number at SIX reactors "in total meltdown." I've typed out a substantial portion of her mind boggling comments in the transcript seen below the video. Seeing her statements typed out in print amplifies, I think, the remarkable recklessness and apparent non-concern she has with factual accuracy. She's much more concerned with the drama of her presentation and its effects upon her audience rather than the veracity of her statements. This woman likes to impress an audience and she does that by routinely uttering sensational, shocking, and alarming statements in order to get her audience to gasp. .She's staging a theatrical performance more than presenting a sober--and responsible--factually sound lecture.

It would take a storage pool the size of MANHATTAN to hold six hundred thousand fuel rods. The TOTAL number of fuel rods found in Daiichi Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 would max out at roughly 4500 (FOUR thousand, five hundred) rods, and that's being GENEROUS]

And also because of that, the whole top third of Honshu, all the way up to the tip of Honshu, that is UNINHABITABLE now. It is THREE TIMES more radioactive on the ground than after Chernobyl. It's uninhabitable. It's over 3,000 Bequerels per second of extremely dangerous radionucleotides that are decaying across that whole top third of Honshu. "
Now the tragic thing is that every nuclear power plant can be converted to natural gas. Because all that reactor does is boil water to turn the turbines to produce electricity. You can put, ah, take the reactor out, put a gas burner in, & produce EIGHT times MORE energy, much cheaper, eliminate the environmental hazards of the emissions because all of the radiation from operations everyday goes up the stack. And it ends up in all the fields, in the food, in the water, the drinking water and in baby's teeth."
[There it is, folks, the pitch to convert from nuclear energy to natural gas--just like ZS Livinstone had told me back in March and April of 2011 (and reported at this web site at the time) as the REAL reason for ginning up the Fukushima radiation psyops. The Fukushima sabotage is coordinated with the artificially created 3/11 earthquake/tsunami cover story in order to set the stage for the radiation "catastrophy" at Daiichi, which in turn is used as the pretext to end ALL nuclear power facilities and replace them with natural gas. And notice the dire, completely fabricated allusion to the "environmental hazards" of radiation that "everyday goes up the stack" to contaminate the fields, food, and drinking water, when no such radioactive "emissions" and particulate contamination takes place at any licensed nuclear power station.]

I've listened to 3 or 4 other video clips so far from Leuren Moret. I'll have to find the time to listen to more in order to isolate her wanton preverications and overstatements to add to this summary. It would take me a week of sitting in front of the computer to review all of her videos posted at Youtube, but in every video clip that I've heard so far, there is a consistent pattern of ludicrous and outright fabrications combined with gross exaggeration. For instance, in one of the Youtube clips I heard, Leuren says that Japan gets an 8.5 Richter [EIGHT POINT FIVE Richter!] earthquake every FIVE years on average, which is utterly absurd. I'll have to go back through the seismic records and verify to be sure, but my guess is that the ONLY earthquake in the 20th century in Japan that even comes close to an 8.5 Richter magnitude was the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 which killed about 140,000 people and practically leveled Tokyo. The magnitude was probably closer to 7.9 or 8.0 Richter.
I'm sure that Leuren's heart is in the right place and she's a concerned humanitarian. I support her efforts to bring the subject of the dangers of depleted uranium to public awareness and the problems associated with nuclear waste storage and the careless handling in the past of nuclear waste materials by government weapons research and processing facilities. However, if she's going to confabulate, exaggerate, and misstate the facts concerning what happened at Fukushima and its aftermath, then she needs to be exposed as a person who has no regard for truth or accuracy. The same charge could be leveled against all of the Fukushima radiation propagandists listed at the beginning of this article. They are all guilty of gross exaggeration and wild allegations masquerading as verified fact.
(By the way, the "upper third of Honshu" is as inhabited today as it was before 3/11. The entire area [except the immediate 18 mile zone around Daiichi] is continuing to live life in the ordinary way: farming, local business, sending kids to school etc. Yes, the coastal areas on the eastern side that were most flooded and damaged are still re-building and some children have been sent to schools farther south, but the vast majority of the inland area was never touched by flooding and has suffered no earthquake damage from 3/11. All the children now carry dosimeters and anyone can get a free radiation scan at local hospitals to verify that they are not glowing or in any way being subjected to "extremely dangerous" levels of background radiation as Moret and her reckless psyops teammates would have you believe. The local hotels and tourists inns are trying their damndest to attract some tourist business because Leuren Moret and her fear promoting colleagues are doing such a bang up job of convincing the whole world that northern Japan is an ionizing radiation death trap.
Arnie Gundersen
I've compiled a lot of data about the-school-teacher-who-wants-the-world-to-think-he's-a-licenced-nuclear-engineer, Arnold Gundersen, and will insert my own detailed report in this section within a few days. For now, I'll repost some articles authored by Rod Adams and others (seen further below) which will give you a very good idea on just HOW slippery Arnie is in the game of Crying Wolf. Arnie was the first Fukushima radiation hysteria promoter I heard on the radio (KPFK) in the immediate aftermath of the 3/11 attack on Japan. And it was Arnie's comments and an equally alarmist KPFK female reporter relaying her tale of anxiety and woe from Tokyo on March 18, 2011 that prompted me to write my March 19, 2011 article debunking the unbelievable radiation fear mongering taking place over the radio and on the Internet.

Wait until you read what the established, orthodox radiological monitoring organization in the U.K. have to say about him. Just go to his Wikipedia page and the asscociated Wikipedia Talk page on Busby to get an idea of just how far out in the wilderness this man roams. He's a politician from the Green Party who got together with two other people and created something called the European Committee on Radiation Risk, which has no connection whatsoever to the EU, the UN, or any other governmental body, yet he goes on Russia Today and tells the interviewer of the "Committee's" assessment of this or that, as if it were a governmental body and he's introduced by the anchor as the Scientific Secretary for the European Committee on Radiation Risk (very impressive for a self annointed title to a private "committee," creaed by, and dedicated to, serving the publicity interests of Christopher Busby).
Busby does the same things with his books. All of his books are self published under a company called Green Audit, which is owned by Christopher Busby. Apparenty, he has pubished nothing to date in a peer reviewed science journal, yet quotes his own books and self published papers as scientific 'sources' and "papers."
Busby was selling "anti-radiation" mineral suplement pills made available through a web site (4u-detox.com) in California run by a man named James Ryan. The mineral supplements were sold under the auspices of a body created by Ryan called The Christopher Busby Foundation for the Children of Fukushima (CBFCF). Busby told the UK Guardian that he has nothing to do with the organization and that Ryan asked him if he could use his name. Ryan told the Guardian that: "All money from 4u Detox goes to children of Fukushima and children throughout Japan. We have donated a great amount to children of Japan". The UK Guardian article reported that the same supplements could be purchased in Japan, but 800% cheaper. The article also reported that Japanese officials took great umbrage to Busby's allegation that the Japanese government was intentionally allowing radioactive materials to be distributed in different parts of Japan and were concealing this radioactive exposure from the public.

"Profwoland"
Incredibly, Busby was editing out negative edits and unflattering additions to his Wikipedia page by Wikipedia editors, by using the name of "profwoland". You can still see see the "profwoland" comments posted under "WP:RS" and the "References and Pubisscations" heading on his Wikipedia Talk page. Chris Busy has a channel on youtube called "drdrwoland",[14] so ProfWoland maybe one and the same. I only just realised this. Does this mean a substantial portion of the article was written by Busby? - I should reiterate what I wrote above though, that essentially there is no particular Wikipedia policy on users making/editing their own pages. This only becomes a problem if the material itself written on this page infringes on actual WP policy. It's not for me to judge whether or not this is the case, of course. IF the story of America storing Plutonium out at Fukushima had any merit, then it REALLY WOULD have been under investigation since the 90's and on DAY ONE of the blasts out there it would have been trumpeted to the ends of the earth. I looked into these claims and they are bold faced lies, most likely spawned by the CIA or STRATFOR, to cover Israel's method of NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL.
This story of plutonium is BRAND SPANKING NEW, was SPAWNED ON GLP [God-Like Productions], and is being pushed so that America takes the blame for Israel's evil.
In my investigation of the Fukushima disaster, I looked into this "weapons being developed out at Fukushima" story, called it the scam it was, and then uncovered Israel's method of getting it's nuclear deterrent into place by researching the background of Magna BSP, the company that planted the camera nukes out at Fukushima, and finding out where this company got contracts elsewhere. SURPRISE - Every nation Magna BSP got a contract in gave the zionist bankers MASSIVE "BAILOUTS" THEY NEVER OWED, INCLUDING AMERICA. This is the REAL STORY, Forget about Plutonium out at reactor 3 - Japan got scammed elsewhere as well, and therefore gave the bankers 100 trillion Yen a month ago, just to be "nice". I wonder why.
Since this Plutonium scam is being pushed to destroy America and save Israel's behind, it will only serve to bring us the NEXT FUKUSHIMA, because if people do not realize that Fukushima was intentionally nuked into oblivion, Israel will, maybe not this year or in the next five years, but definitely in a decade DO IT AGAIN and we need to nail this coffin shut RIGHT NOW so it NEVER happens again.

Its time for the radiation fear mongers to stop damaging the truth movement
There is a good possibility that something awful is happening now and that a large portion of the truth movement has been derailed to discussing irrelevant issues so that something very real and important slips under the radar. Sure, Fukushima is bad. Sure, it probably equals World War 3. But what people do not realize is that radiation really is not all that hazardous, so even if radiation levels get to all out World War 3 levels (which would be right around 25 msv a year GLOBALLY,) it won't be an extinction level event and probably would not even be noticed.The elite HATE nuclear power. It represents the pinnacle of technology, which caused them severe control issues with regard to enslaving mankind. Right now people are VERY hard to control and enslave, technology has provided a venue from which freedom can launch in the most unexpected ways. It's very hard to control us and the elite long for a return to feudal times, where they ruled from palaces over totally defenseless serfs. This was proven in their books I had access to when I was among them, so when you see the next carbon tax, "we are destroying the planet" campaign, or MAKE DO WITH LESS effort, remember, the end goal is to get rid of technology and they will take as many small steps as needed to accomplish that.
Just look at our worthless schools, sabotaged vaccines, and a plethora of other things - we are on our way down, not up, and the only way to keep us down once we ARE down is to make sure our minds are destroyed and no one understands an ounce of science. And therein lies the root of scientific ignorance with regard to ANY nuclear related topic.
Natural background radiation levels vary by at least two full orders of magnitude around the world, and some areas which have long standing civilizations with perfectly healthy people are well over 100 msv [milli sieverts] a year naturally. There are areas like this in Sweden, Norway, China, Brazil, and India. This is far above the evacuation threshold for Fukushima and Chernobyl (The Chernobyl exclusion zone was set at 5 msv/year). And the highest radiation area in the world is in Ramsar, which is a resort town in Northern Iran. This town has a whopping natural background radiation of 260 msv a year. Now, I don't think I would want to move there, because I am not adapted to it, but many studies have been done on the people and wildlife in that area and they adapted to it, are perfectly healthy, and have some of the longest life spans in the world.
When I did the math for Fukushima being equal to world war 3, it was from a scientific radiological perspective - to give people an idea of how much was released, to prove nuclear weapons were used to destroy Fukushima because that's the only way enough nuclear material would have been thrown skyward to match the radiation readings in Japan and elsewhere. But I did not harp on health related issues because with regard to Fukushima, outside of Japan there should be ABSOLUTELY NONE. My purpose with that report and the Fukushima report was to prevent another military action against nuclear facilities in the U.S. and other nations; Fukushima alone will not do much; it really is Japan's problem. But if you add to it 90 or so other nuclear facilities in America, THEN we really would have something to worry about.
The ignorance and silence of the so-called truth movement on the root issues - Fukushima was the result of an act of war, and the tsunami was triggered by nukes in the Japan Trench, and the earthquake was both man made and phony, - ignorance and silence towards these issues is not only damning; it could end up being our undoing.

In this interview, James Corbett was fooled into making the following claims: that 1. The U.S. gave Japan 70 tons of weapons grade PLUTONIUM for a secret weapons program, and that 2. The breeder reactor was a failure in the U.S. that cost twenty billion dollars, was in development for far too long, and after giving up on the breeder reactor program, America turned it over to Japan so that their "superior" engineers could "close the nuclear loop - the nuclear fuel cycle."
First a little math. At 70 tons, that's 70,000 KG of weapons grade Plutonium. At 4 kg per nuclear warhead needed per bomb, that's 17,500 of the GOOD nuclear warheads, not junk. So force of logic says that such claims are ludicrous, NO NATION GIVES AWAY THAT MUCH MATERIAL. That's more than TWICE our current arsenal. So the logic loop, to take blame off Israel will be, Japan was making a nuclear bomb right below reactor 3 and THAT is what blew it sky high, NOT: Magna Bsp's Owl
Now onto the next error in Corbett's report
The man he interviewed bamboozled him into believing America did not close the nuclear fuel cycle and failed after spending "twenty billion dollars" That's unfortunate for Corbett, because as part of the Fukushima report, I actually hunted down one of the four top American engineers involved with the breeder reactor, and here is what he had to say about it:
"I started in the American nuclear program all the way back at the time of the Manhattan project, and have been involved in reactor design and nuclear engineering my whole life. There was one answer we all searched for, and it was how to close the nuclear loop.
When a reactor such as a boiling water reactor uses fuel, the waste products (which are highly radioactive isotopes that have a different fission characteristic than the fuel) build up in the fuel and poison the nuclear reaction. A reactor such as a boiling water reactor can only use the fuel until it gets contaminated by these isotopes enough to change the nature of the nuclear reactions taking place. The reaction environment inside a boiling water reactor is only one such environment that will work to trigger a chain reaction, and if that spent fuel is put into a reactor made from different materials, those materials can favor the burning of the poisonous isotopes, and use the isotopes as fuel until the fuel is purified of them, and therefore had it's original radiological characteristics restored. Once that is accomplished, the fuel can go back into the boiling water reactor, and used as new.
We perfected the second reactor design, which used liquid sodium as a coolant, and the reactor ran much hotter - 1100 farenheit as opposed to 550 in a boiling water reactor. The liquid sodium circulated inside the reactor in lieu of water, with the heat of the reaction being removed from the system by a heat exchanger which boiled the water outside the reactor for use in producing electricity. The temperature difference and coolant characteristics facilitated the burning of the isotopes, and you got to use both sides of the reaction - one side produced electricity while poisoning the fuel, and the other side produced electricity while burning the poisons out. This process can be repeated 20 times, and when it is finished the fuel is DEAD and no longer hazardous because all of it's radiological potential has been used up. It was a dream come true, and Carter banned it by executive order!"
He specifically stated that the burn down was so complete that the spent fuel was safe to handle directly with bare hands, and needed no special care or maintenance at all. He stated that they got it a LOT sooner than expected, and as a result, fortunately all the nuclear facilities were over built to handle waste fuel because they expected it to build up before this technology could be perfected, when in reality the technology was perfected long before that (in 1977). He VERY CLEARLY STATED IT WAS DONE BY G.E. and came in WAY under budget, FAR FAR under budget.
Corbett landed himself a big fat LIAR.
The engineer then went on to lament about what a waste of money it was to ban the technology, because the fuel is expensive, and they were only using it to about five percent of its total potential. He lamented the fact that his life's greatest accomplishment got banned for no good reason, and it was a tremendous waste of money to not use the technology his team developed. Electricity would have been cheap. REAL CHEAP. So cheap that homes would not have been heated with oil or natural gas, electricity would have been the only sensible choice. Furthermore, with a reduction in the price of electricity by at least 10X, electric cars would have been a no brainer.
This would have been America's free energy future, with the only real cost being maintenance of infrastructure. There would have been no nuclear waste, he specifically stated that you could make a bed out of the truly spent fuel and sleep on it safely. Nuclear waste would have been a thing of the past.
I will tell you exactly what I think about this getting banned.It got banned because the last real president, who was NOT an enemy of the state, got MURDERED. We have had enemies in power ever since. LOOK at what has happened to this nation since Kennedy! We now have doctors issuing antidpressants that blow people's existence, vaccines that destroy the children, our industry got shipped overseas, our media over run by zionist filth, our schools destroyed, you name it, it IS NOT what it was at the time of Kennedy and there is a REASON. Don't worry about reactor 4!(WORRY about reactor 3!)This report proves that the fuel pool at reactor 4 is stable. It also proves that the reactor was NOT in operation when it "exploded", and in addition to the classified photos and testimony of Tepco, that the reactor was dis-assembled and undergoing replacement of it's internal stainless steel shroud when it "exploded"..
IF the reactor had been in operation when it "exploded" there would have been a melt down and radioactive material thrown everywhere and they would not be able to take apart the top section of the containment OR would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS been able to go INSIDE the containment, under the fuel pool and re-enforce it. They are going along with a BIG FAT LIE under THREAT, and the linked report proves it!
The other reactors are totally inaccessible, because the radiation levels in their containment structures are up to 1,300 sieverts an hour, a level that will kill you in exactly 15 seconds. That's not enough time for people to go in and install those supports, and I really don't think asimo, despite being a brilliant robot, is up to the job.The fact that those supports are in place now proves that the pool is not leaking as some claim, and that there is no way that reactor could have been in operation when the quake struck.

Arnie Gundersen – Still spreading unwarranted fear far and wideBy Rod Adams · August 23, 2011 ·In his most recent video, Arnie Gundersen calmly, but inaccurately, explains why people should remain fearful of extremely low levels of radiation and radioactive materials. He sounds so knowledgeable and is so often quoted by people who are adamantly opposed to the use of nuclear energy that it is worth a little time to point out the flaws in his logic, math and knowledge level and to demonstrate why his overall conclusions are thus completely wrong.
The first point to make is one that might be explained by Mr. Gundersen as simply a verbal “typo” in which he really knows the answer but misspoke. When describing his theory about how radioactive sulfur found on the US west coast was produced in Japan, he said that it came from neutron activation of the sodium found in salt water (minute 1:56).

It is not possible to form radioactive sulfur, which has an atomic number of 16, by hitting the nucleus of sodium, which has an atomic number of 11, with neutrons. It is possible to form radioactive sulfur through neutron bombardment and proton emission from chlorine, which has an atomic number of 17. The reaction is commonly referred to as an n, p activation.
Since salt is NaCl, it can be the source of radioactive sulfur if hit with neutrons. Nuclear alchemy works, but conservation of atomic particles prevents leaping up from one location on the periodic table to another some distance away.
Aside: I know I am occasionally guilty of making similar verbal errors in casual conversation and perhaps even on my recorded podcasts, so I am generally grateful when someone points them out. Just last night I said James Island, the name of a place where I lived a long time ago, when I was talking about spending some time on the James River which runs through my new hometown. End Aside.Gundersen also asserts that the formation of radioactive sulfur supports his contention that there were occasions long after the initial plant shutdowns when the cores experienced continuing chain reactions and ongoing criticalities (minue 3:10). In his best Dr. Evil imitation voice, Gundersen says that researchers have calculated that the amount formed would have required 400 BILLION (minute 2:10) neutrons per square meter. He tells his viewers that is an enormous number of neutrons (minute 2:20). Here is a different view that a nuclear professional posted on a private email list to which I subscribe:
Four hundred billion neutrons per square meter? That’s trivial!
The peak thermal neutron flux in a CANDU reactor at full power is 1.0 E14 neutrons per square centimeter per second. The current of thermal neutrons flowing out of the core to the reflector is (crudely) one percent of this, or 1.0 E12 neutrons per square centimeter per second.
This flow amounts to 1.0E16 neutrons per square meter per second. But don’t worry – they are all absorbed or they decay (free neutron mean lifetime is 885 seconds).
Four hundred billion neutrons? This number is less than one billionth the number of neutrons that leak out of an operating power reactor every day.
When they are absorbed, these neutrons can, of course, activate other materials. But I don’t judge this as an earth-shattering revelation.
If there had been any criticality events, the number of neutrons would have been far higher. What Gundersen apparently has forgotten from his nuclear engineering training is that there are several actinides formed in nuclear reactors that undergo spontaneous fissions and other nuclear decays. Those natural nuclear events provide a “source” level of neutrons long after chain reactions have been stopped. It is those source neutrons, by the way, that help make start-ups of formerly operated reactors much simpler than the initial start-up of a brand new core.
Gundersen also claims that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission implied that plutonium that was reported to have been detected in minute quantities about a kilometer from the plant came from inside the reactor cores, not from damage to spent fuel in the spent fuel pools. The reality is that the plutonium measurements were consistent with fallout from nuclear weapons detonations both at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and from the extensive atmospheric weapons testing programs carried out by the five nuclear weapons states during the 1940s, 50s, 60s and into the 1970s.

His career has received a measurable boost since March 11, when a large earthquake and powerful tsunami successfully peeled off most of the many layers of protection at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station.
Ever since that day, Gundersen has been giving scary interviews in a variety of media outlets that include a number of dire predictions. He claimed that the spent fuel pool for unit 4 had gone dry and that he had the video to prove it. That claim remains available on his web site, so he is apparently standing by his early evaluation despite all evidence that contradicts his claim.
He has been working with a PR firm to create a series of popular YouTube videos that build on his decade or more as a classroom teacher and as a former nuclear services salesman – he looks so calm, studious and trustworthy as he uses a variety of visual aids to convince his viewers of the provably false statement that Fukushima was worse than Chernobyl.
He has been making the rounds of the advertiser supported media recently with stories about the dangers of “hot particles” that are so tiny they cannot be picked up by normal radiation detectors. (Note: Radiation can be measured at extremely low levels, far below the levels that can cause human health effects. There is a reason why doctors inject small amounts radioactive materials into their patients as tracers to assist them in diagnosing organ function – those tracers make bodily systems visible without endangering the patient. If the hot particles are so tiny and dispersed that they cannot be detected, they are nothing to worry about.)In the past 48 hours, I have received a link to an Al Jazeera story titled Fukushima: It’s much worse than you think from at least five separate sources. That article quotes Gundersen extensively – after it buffs up Gundersen’s credentials in an effort to add to the credibility of his claims.
“Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind,” Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice president, told Al Jazeera.
Japan’s 9.0 earthquake on March 11 caused a massive tsunami that crippled the cooling systems at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan. It also led to hydrogen explosions and reactor meltdowns that forced evacuations of those living within a 20km radius of the plant.
Gundersen, a licensed reactor operator with 39 years of nuclear power engineering experience, managing and coordinating projects at 70 nuclear power plants around the US, says the Fukushima nuclear plant likely has more exposed reactor cores than commonly believed.
“Fukushima has three nuclear reactors exposed and four fuel cores exposed,” he said, “You probably have the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactor cores because of the fuel cores, and they are all in desperate need of being cooled, and there is no means to cool them effectively.”
Gundersen goes on and on about how bad everything is and how the accident will go on indefinitely, will contaminate aquifers, and will result in harm to future generations. What he fails to mention is that the radiation and radioactive material that has escaped from Fukushima has not made anyone sick. It is difficult to imagine how a non-fatal accident can earn the title of “biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind” over events like those listed on the Wikipedia page titled List of industrial disasters. That list contains dozens of events that each killed hundreds to thousands of people and often resulted in widespread, long lasting chemical contamination.
Quite honestly, I have become tired of the effort required to respond and debunk each of his false claims.
Instead, I prefer to follow multifaceted strategy that includes pointing to much better sources of information. Will Davis provides an excellent June 18 update of Fukushima status that includes a calculation of exactly how many reactor cores are really involved, including all of the spent fuel pools. (Hint, it is no where near the 20 that Gundersen claims.)

He is a disgruntled former nuclear services salesman who has a strong motive for disliking the nuclear industry – he got fired from his lucrative position as a senior vice president in the early 1990s after accusing his employer of improperly handling radioactive sources that could be purchased via mail order. He was sued by his employer and he claims that he was blackballed by the industry.
For a decade or more, he worked as a private school teacher at a salary approximately 1/4th of what he was making in the nuclear industry and supplemented that income with expert witness testimony in cases in which he testified against nuclear companies. His qualification as an expert witness was based on the fact that he had earned both a BS and an MS in nuclear engineering. He knows enough of the technical details of nuclear energy to seem believable, but he also has been guilty of embellishing his experience to give his observations even more credibility.
One example that is nearly unforgivable is his continued claim that he is a licensed nuclear reactor operator. The only reactor that he was ever license to operate was a 100 Watt “critical assembly” at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. That reactor had no power generation ability – its thermal power was about as much as a single lightbulb. Operating it provides no experience at all in nuclear power plant operations or maintenance. It frosts me to think that the news media ignores the thousands of far better qualified sources of information simply because Gundersen is accessible and willing to tell fibs in order to provide exciting copy.
Several people have challenged me with regard to my efforts to expose Gundersen as having strong personal and financial motives to attack his former industry. They do not like my efforts to show that he has not been completely forthcoming about his experience. They have told me that it is not fair to focus on the messenger; they say I should focus on countering his assertions instead.
My response is to remind people that it is often far more effective to aim at the archer than to aim at the arrows. (Of course, I am speaking figuratively here. My weapon is my keyboard.)
